The Council
The Council of the GDC was restructured in 2009. It is now made up of 24 members - 12 appointed registrants and 12 appointed lay members.
It is Council's job to ensure the GDC carries out its core functions efficiently and in ways that ensure the safety of patients.
It is responsible for setting the strategy and direction of the GDC and ensuring that all major decisions are in line with the strategy, taking major policy decisions, and ensuring and monitoring financial integrity.
The committees
The Council is assisted by committees. There are statutory committees and standing committees. Standing committees are set up by the Council to look at policies and processes in a particular area, whereas statutory committees are defined by the Dentists Act 1984 and usually carry out part of our regulatory work.
The staff

The Council is supported by around 175 staff, headed up by the Chief Executive and Registrar, Evlynne Gilvarry and the executive management team (EMT).
EMT is responsible for:
- managing and deploying the resources provided by the Council to achieve its objectives,
- providing leadership to the managers and staff who carry out the Council’s business, and
- providing the senior executive face of the Council in its relations with stakeholder and partner organisations.
EMT members fulfil the function of executive directors of the Council. They share collective responsibility for actions and decisions taken, regardless of their individual line responsibilities.

The staff team is made up of four directorates: corporate services, governance, policy and communications, and regulation. There are around 20 teams within those directorates and each team carries out a specific role.
