The Council

The Council was appointed on 1 October 2009 and consists of 24 members. Twelve members are dentists or dental care professionals and twelve are lay people. Future change to the governance structure of the General Dental Council is likely as a result of the Government's 2011 command paper Enabling excellence: Autonomy and accountability for healthcare workers, social workers and social care workers which sets out plans for the future of healthcare regulation in the UK.

Chief dental officers as associate members of Council take part in discussions but do not vote at Council.
